Not particularly. A current chain actuator on a domestic roof window produces a low mechanical hum for the half minute or so it is travelling, comparable to an electric window in a car, and then silence. It is audible in a quiet bedroom and inaudible in a kitchen with anything else going on. The noise people actually complain about is almost never the motor. It is the sash knocking at the end of travel, a loose blind rattling, or a badly seated gasket letting wind whistle once the unit is shut.
What the sound is made of
Three components, arriving in that order. There is a small click as the drive engages and the sash breaks its seal. There is the running note of the gearbox for the duration of travel, which is the steady hum. And there is the closing sequence, where the sash meets the gasket and the mechanism pulls it down against the seal before stopping.
The running note is the one manufacturers publish figures for and the one that is genuinely quiet. The engagement click and the closing pull are short, and they are also the two that get louder when something is wrong.
Structure carries more than air does
A rooflight is bolted into a timber opening that is connected to plasterboard, joists and rafters. Vibration travels through that far more efficiently than through the air in the room. The result is that a mechanism which sounds negligible when you stand under it in an empty house can be clearly audible in the bedroom on the other side of the same partition.
That is a construction question rather than a product one. The fixings, the packers behind the frame and the tightness of the internal lining all decide how much of the mechanism’s vibration ends up in the fabric of the house. A frame packed properly on resilient bearing points, fixed square and not over-tightened, is markedly quieter than one wedged and driven home hard.
Mains against solar, on noise
Solar units tend to be the quieter of the two, and for an unglamorous reason. A mains mechanism has continuous power available and is geared for a brisker cycle, so it works faster and makes more of a note doing it. A solar mechanism runs from a battery it has to husband, so it travels slowly and gently.
The difference is real but small. Nobody chooses between the two on noise, and if they did they would be choosing on the wrong criterion. Where it matters is a bedroom directly under the unit, and there the slower solar cycle is a genuine if minor advantage.
The noises that mean something is wrong

None of those are the motor. All of them are cheaper to deal with early than late, and the first and last are settings rather than parts.
Why commissioning decides how it sounds for the next decade
The travel limits define where the mechanism stops at each end. Set the closed limit correctly and the sash compresses its gasket evenly and the drive stops with a soft, even load. Set it a few millimetres beyond and the mechanism strains against a stop it can never reach, which produces a hard knock every single time and shortens the gearbox’s life while it does it.
This takes minutes at handover and it is the difference between a window you stop noticing and one that annoys somebody every evening. It is also why we want to be present when the supply goes live rather than leaving the setting up to whoever happens to be last on site.
Keeping it quiet over the years
A mechanism gets louder gradually, and the cause is nearly always something you can address without a specialist.
- Wipe the frame channel and the visible drive line when you clean the glass, so grit does not travel into the gears.
- Check any internal blind’s brackets are tight, since a loose blind is the commonest rattle in the room.
- Keep the hinges moving freely, so the sash is light for the mechanism to carry.
- Cycle the unit fully once every few weeks through the winter rather than leaving it shut for six months.
- If the closing note changes character, have the limits checked before assuming the mechanism is failing.

Noise you will hear whether the unit is powered or not
Two sounds get blamed on the motor and belong to the rooflight itself. Rain on glass is one: a glazed opening in a ceiling is a drum head, and heavy rain on a rooflight over a bedroom is loud in a way people are unprepared for. Thicker glass, laminated glass and triple glazing all reduce it, and that is a specification decision taken at the order rather than afterwards.
The other is thermal movement. Aluminium and timber expand and contract at different rates, and a rooflight cooling on a clear night after a hot day will tick and creak as it settles. It is harmless, it is not the mechanism, and it happens on manual units just as readily.
What to ask for if quiet matters
If the unit is going over a bedroom or a study, say so at survey and it changes what we specify and how we fit it. Laminated or triple glazed sash to deal with rain noise. Resilient packing and correctly torqued fixings so vibration stays out of the structure. A control layer that lets you schedule the vent for a time when the room is empty, rather than opening it as you get into bed. And travel limits set properly at commissioning, which costs nothing at all and matters most.
