Usually yes. On a current VELUX, Fakro, Keylite or Roto roof window the blind is an accessory that clips into a channel already moulded into the frame, so a blind fitted three years after the rooflight sits exactly where one fitted on day one would. The complication is never the clipping in. It is finding power for the motor in a ceiling that has since been plastered, painted and lived under, and it is why doing it later costs more than doing it at the outset.
A blind is an accessory, not part of the sash
This is the fact that makes the answer yes. Manufacturers design the sash with a recessed channel down each side and mounting points at the head, deliberately, so that the blind range can be sold separately and fitted at any point in the unit’s life. The blind cassette sits at the top of the sash, the side channels guide the fabric, and the whole assembly is held by brackets that engage in slots already there.
Nothing is drilled through the frame. Nothing touches the glazing seal. The weathertightness of the rooflight is completely unaffected, which is the concern most people raise first and it is the easiest to dismiss.
Your existing frame profile decides everything
Compatibility runs on the frame code, not on the brand. Every roof window carries a type and size code on a data plate, usually visible on the top of the sash when the unit is opened, and the blind is ordered against that code. Get the code and the answer is definite within a minute.
Where it goes wrong is with older units, bespoke rooflights and lanterns. A roof window from a generation ago may use a channel profile the current blind range no longer covers. A bespoke flat-roof rooflight built as a glazed panel in a kerb has no channels at all, so any blind is a separate assembly mounted to the plasterboard reveal below the unit rather than into the frame. A lantern is a third case again, needing blinds cut to each facet.
Finding power for a blind nobody wired for
Here is the real cost of leaving it late. A mains-powered blind needs a low-voltage supply arriving at the head of the sash. In a finished ceiling that supply has to come from somewhere, and the options are all more disruptive than a cable run at first fix.
Sometimes there is a spare conductor already at the unit, left by a thoughtful electrician when the rooflight itself was wired. Sometimes floorboards can be lifted in the room above. Sometimes a cable can run within the reveal and be boxed. Often none of those apply, and the answer moves to a battery or solar blind instead. The cable question is why we set out the blind decision at survey even when the customer says they will think about it later.

For a retrofit on a high-level unit, solar is the arrangement that gives the least future trouble, provided the slope gets daylight. On a north-facing slope in a shaded garden, mains is worth the disruption.
Pairing to a controller that predates the blind
If the rooflight itself is already electric, you may be able to add the blind to the same remote or wall keypad, so one control operates both. Whether that works depends on the generation of the control system. Radio protocols have changed over the years and a blind bought this year may not speak to a controller from an earlier system.
The workable outcomes are three: pair it to the existing controller, which is ideal; add a second small controller for the blind, which means two devices in the room; or replace the controller so everything sits on one system, which is the tidiest and the most expensive. Ask the supplier for the compatibility position against your specific controller model before ordering.
Getting a hand to the head of the frame afterwards
Fitting a blind is a five-minute task at bench height and an awkward one at four metres. The cassette has to be offered up, the brackets engaged, the side channels clipped and the fabric squared. Doing that over a stairwell means a tower, and towers cost more than blinds.
This is worth planning around. If you know there is any chance of wanting a blind on a high-level unit, the moment to fit it is while access equipment is already on site for the rooflight installation. It is the same argument as painting behind a radiator: trivial now, tiresome later.
What ordering it with the unit would have saved
Two things, and neither is the blind itself. The cable, because it goes in at first fix at almost no cost. And the access, because the scaffold or tower is already there.
There is a third, smaller saving in matching. Blind fabrics and cassette finishes get revised over time, so a blind ordered later may not be an exact match for one fitted at the same time as its neighbour in the next rooflight along. Blackout, pleated and awning do different jobs
Worth settling before you order, because people buy the wrong one. A blackout blind runs in sealed side channels and is for sleeping, which makes it the right answer in a bedroom and an overreaction in a kitchen. A pleated blind diffuses light and softens glare without darkening the room, and it is the usual choice in a living space. An external awning blind sits outside the glass and is the only one of the three that stops solar heat before it enters, which makes it the right answer for overheating rather than for privacy.
