Traditionally a single vertical bar dividing the light into two panes. That one division is what makes a modern unit read as a Victorian cast-iron rooflight rather than a panel of glass set in a roof. It is a strong convention rather than a universal requirement, and on larger units the arrangement can reasonably differ.
Where the single bar convention comes from
The bar is inherited rather than invented. Nineteenth-century cast-iron rooflights went into workshops, stables, coach houses and scullery roofs, and the glass available at the time came in modest sheet sizes. A light of any useful area therefore had to be made in more than one pane, with a member down the centre carrying the join. The bar was a manufacturing constraint that everybody could see, repeated across thousands of buildings until it became what a rooflight simply looked like.
Modern conservation units copy that division deliberately. The constraint has gone, since a single sealed unit of the same size is straightforward to make, but the visual signature has not. Reproducing it is the cheapest way of making a new component belong on an old roof, and it costs nothing but the bar itself.
That history is why the convention is so consistent across ranges. Manufacturers are not each reaching independently for a design idea; they are copying the same object, still visible on outbuildings and rear slopes across Oxfordshire.
A convention with real force, but not a rule
There is no registered definition of a conservation rooflight. What exists is a widely understood set of characteristics, and the single vertical bar is one of them. So the honest answer to what a conservation rooflight needs is: what the person assessing your proposal expects it to have.
In practice that varies. Some officers treat the bar as an intrinsic part of the type and will look for it in the specification. Others are concerned almost entirely with whether the unit sits flush in the plane of the roof, on the reasonable ground that the profile is what shows at a distance while a bar does not. Some correspondence names the bar explicitly, and plenty does not mention it at all.
None of that makes the bar optional as a matter of design. It makes it a question to settle rather than assume. Where a building is listed or the roof is a material consideration, the arrangement of the light is part of what was approved, and a unit differing from the approved description is a problem you have bought.
What the bar does when you look at a roof
The effect is easier to see than to argue. A flush, dark, undivided rectangle in a roof still reads as a modern component, because nothing about its shape belongs to the building. Put one vertical division through it and the eye stops reading a sheet of glass and starts reading a light. The proportions become two upright panes, which is the proportion the originals had.
The honest qualification is about distance. At close range, from a garden or a neighbouring upper window, the bar is doing obvious work. At the far end of a street it is much less visible than the profile of the unit is, because what carries at that distance is the shadow line thrown by anything standing proud of the roof plane.
Read the two characteristics in that order. Flush does the heavy lifting on how the roof reads overall. The bar decides whether the thing set into it looks like it was always there.
How the bar is formed inside the unit
Manufacturers achieve the division in more than one way, and the differences matter enough to ask about before ordering. Some ranges divide the light into two separate sealed units either side of a structural bar, which is closest to how the originals were made and which reads convincingly from both sides. Others apply a bar to a single sealed unit, either externally, internally, or as a member set between the panes.
All of those have their place, but they do not all solve the same problem. A bar applied only on the inside face leaves the roof reading as an undivided rectangle from outside, which is precisely where the appearance is being assessed. If the bar is in the specification because somebody outside the building expects to see one, it needs to be visible from outside the building.
The other thing worth establishing is the visual weight of the bar. Ranges differ in how substantial the member looks, and a very slim modern-looking division does less work than a heavier one closer to the cast-iron original.
Larger units, and where the arrangement changes
The single bar suits a unit of roughly the proportions the originals had: upright, modest, sized to drop between rafters. Scale it up and the convention starts to strain. A large light divided only once produces two very big panes, which does not resemble anything historic and can look more modern than an undivided unit would.
Ranges answer that differently. Some carry a horizontal transom as well on their larger sizes, giving four panes. Some introduce a second vertical bar. Some do not offer the larger sizes in a divided pattern at all, which is a constraint rather than a choice.
There is usually a better route than pushing one unit up in size. Two modest upright lights set apart tend to read more comfortably on an older roof than one broad one, remove less structure, and often deliver comparable daylight to the room below. Where a proposal has arrived at a single large opening for internal reasons, that is the conversation to have before drawings are prepared rather than after.
Settling the expectation before anything is ordered
Conservation-pattern units are made to order, and bespoke sizes more so. A unit ordered against one glazing arrangement and then caught by a condition requiring another is money spent on an object nobody can use, and waiting is what avoids it.
So the sequence we work is to establish what is actually expected first. Where an officer has used the phrase conservation rooflight in correspondence, we find out what sits behind it: the profile, the bar, the size and the position on the slope, ideally in writing. Where an application is being prepared, the unit goes into it by manufacturer, range, finish and glazing pattern, because a named specification can be assessed and a generic reference cannot.
