Two colours, not one. Anthracite grey outside, close to RAL 7016, and white inside, close to RAL 9010. That combination suits the majority of Oxford extensions: dark bars read as thin lines against the sky from outside, and pale bars bounce light down into the room rather than casting a dark grid across the ceiling. Dual colour adds very little to the price of an aluminium lantern and is decided in one line on the order. If you want a single answer and no further thought, that is the one to take.
Anthracite outside, and why it became the default
Dark frames on a roof work for an optical reason rather than a fashion one. Looked at from below or from a neighbouring window, a lantern is seen against bright sky. A white bar against bright sky is a light object on a light background and reads at its full width. A dark bar against the same sky reads as a line, and the eye discounts it.
The practical effect is that anthracite makes a lantern look slimmer than it is, without anybody paying for narrower sections. It also handles dirt better on a horizontal-ish surface where rain does not wash it clean, and it sits comfortably against grey slate, dark clay tile, single-ply membrane and grey aluminium fascias alike.
White inside, and what it does to the room
Inside, everything reverses. The lantern is now the bright thing and the ceiling around it is the dark background. Dark bars against the sky, seen from a dim room, become high-contrast black lines, and on a lantern with many bars that reads as a cage over the light.
White or a very pale grey does the opposite. It catches the daylight coming through the glass and re-emits it, softening the transition between glass and ceiling and letting the aperture feel like an opening rather than a framed object. In a kitchen with white plaster reveals around the lantern, a white internal frame makes the join disappear, which is usually the intention.
How dual colour is actually made
On an aluminium lantern the frame sections are extruded, then powder coated. A dual-colour unit is coated twice, with the internal faces masked while the external ones are sprayed and the reverse for the second pass. It is a standard production option rather than a special, which is why the uplift is small.
Timber lanterns work differently. The frame is usually a timber core with an aluminium external cladding, so the internal colour is a paint or stain finish on wood and the external is powder coating on metal. Matching the doors, the windows and the fascia
The single most common error is choosing the lantern colour in isolation and then discovering it is a near-match rather than a match to the bi-fold doors below it. Two slightly different greys sitting in the same elevation look like a mistake, where two obviously different colours would have looked deliberate.
So take the RAL reference from whatever is already specified: the doors, the windows, the rainwater goods, the fascia. If your doors are RAL 7016 in a matt texture, order the lantern as RAL 7016 in a matt texture. Gloss level matters as much as hue here, because the same RAL number in gloss and in matt will not look like the same colour on a sunny afternoon.

Black, and where it goes wrong
Jet black externally is a deliberate architectural choice and it works on a crisp modern extension with black window frames and a dark covering. On a Victorian brick rear addition beside a cream painted reveal it usually looks harsh, and anthracite gives the same slimming effect with less shouting.
Black also shows everything. Pollen, dust, hard water marks and the salt bloom that comes off some mortars are all pale, and all of them are visible on a black frame from the first spring. Anthracite hides them; black advertises them.
Stone, brick and the conservation eye
Across the Oxford stone belt, and on the ironstone edges of our area, very dark frames can look imported. A slate grey or a mid-grey sits more easily against a warm buff limestone than anthracite does, and on a listed or conservation-area property a painted timber frame in an off-white is often what an officer will be looking for.
This matters only where the lantern is visible from a public vantage. On a rear roof behind a parapet it is your decision alone. Where the roof is seen from a street or a churchyard, the colour becomes part of what gets discussed, and the planning page sets out when that conversation is required.
Dark frames, heat and south-facing roofs
A black aluminium frame in July gets hot to the touch, and people reasonably ask whether that heats the room. In a modern lantern it largely does not, because the frame has a polyamide thermal break separating the external section from the internal one, and that break is doing exactly this job.
What dark colour does affect is thermal movement. Aluminium expands, dark aluminium expands more because it runs hotter, and on a long lantern that movement has to be allowed for at the joints. Any competent manufacturer accounts for it. It is worth knowing because it is the real reason cheap dark frames sometimes show hairline gaps at the ridge after a hot summer.
Getting the colour right on the order
Specify four things and there is nothing left to go wrong: the external RAL number, the internal RAL number, the gloss or texture level for each, and the coating grade. Ask for a sample of the actual coated section rather than a colour chart, and look at it outdoors, both in sun and in shade, held up against the doors it has to live with. A chart printed on paper is not the same material and will mislead you.
