Can you convert a manual rooflight to electric?

Sometimes, and it depends almost entirely on what you already have. Where a manual roof window comes from a manufacturer who still supplies a matching opener for that model, conversion is a real option and the work is mostly indoors. Where the unit is old, discontinued, from a maker who never offered a powered version, or a fixed rooflight with no opening sash at all, conversion is not achievable and replacement is the honest answer. The unit you own decides this, not your budget.

Identify the unit before anyone quotes you

Every roof window carries a data plate, usually on the sash frame and visible when the window is swung open, sometimes under a hinge cover. It gives the maker, the model code and the size code. Those few characters decide whether a compatible opener exists.

Photograph that plate. Photograph the head of the frame with the sash open, and the control bar at the top. Send them to us before anything else happens. A conversation about conversion that starts without the plate is a conversation about a hypothetical window, and we would rather not have it.

What has to be true for a conversion to work

Four things, and all four together.

  • The sash has to open already. A fixed rooflight has no hinge, no gasket line designed to compress under a motor, and no frame head built to carry one. There is nothing to motorise.
  • The maker has to offer an opener for that model. Powered kits are built to a specific frame profile and a specific mounting point. Generic actuators bolted to a frame that was never designed for one put load in the wrong place.
  • The frame and hinges have to be sound. A motor drives a sash to a fixed limit every time. If the timber has softened or the hinges have worn, the motor finds that out faster than a person would.
  • Power has to be able to reach it, or the kit has to be solar. Which brings us to the part that usually decides the job.

The cable is the real obstacle, not the motor

Fitting the opener is a bounded job: the mechanism mounts to the head of the frame, brackets pick up on the sash, the lead is dressed back, and the whole thing is set up. Most of it happens from inside the room on a step ladder.

Getting a supply to it is the part that touches your house. A mains kit needs a low-voltage feed from a control unit, and in a finished room that means boards up, plaster chased, or trunking down a wall in plain sight. That work is often larger and messier than the conversion itself, and it is the reason many conversions that look sensible on paper are abandoned once the route is drawn on a plan.

Solar kits exist precisely for this situation

A solar opener carries its own photovoltaic panel and battery on the outer frame, so it needs nothing from the house. It is the reason conversion is a realistic proposition at all in a plastered ceiling, and in an older building where a lath and plaster ceiling is original fabric it is usually the only proposition worth entertaining.

The compromises are real and worth stating. The mechanism is sized to an energy budget, so it is slower and less forceful than a mains equivalent. The panel wants daylight, so a shaded or north-facing slope charges poorly. And the panel is a visible addition on the outside of the frame, which matters where the roof is seen from the street or sits in a conservation area.

When replacing the whole unit is the better spend

We will say this plainly, because it comes up often. If the window is more than about two decades old, if the glazing seal has failed and the pane is misted, if the timber has movement in it, or if the model is long discontinued, putting a new motor on it is money spent on the wrong half of the problem.

A replacement gives you a current sash, current glass, a current flashing kit matched to your covering, a factory-fitted mechanism designed into the frame rather than added to it, and a warranty on the whole assembly. It costs more. It is frequently better value across the next fifteen years, and it is the option we recommend more often than customers expect.

What the conversion visit involves

Assuming the parts exist and the frame is sound, the work runs in a set order. The manual control bar or handle assembly comes off. The mechanism is mounted to the head of the frame on the fixings the manufacturer designed for it. The sash brackets are set so the drive line is square, because a mechanism pulling at an angle wears itself out. The lead is dressed and connected, by a qualified electrician where mains supply is involved.

Then it is set up rather than simply switched on. Travel limits are set so the sash compresses its gasket evenly all round at the closed position. That single adjustment is what keeps the unit weathertight and stops the mechanism straining against a badly defined stop. Controls are paired, and the rain sensor, if the kit includes one, is tested.

What to send us to get a straight answer

Photographs of the data plate, of the window open from inside, of the head of the frame, and of the ceiling around it. Tell us whether the ceiling is finished plasterboard, original lath and plaster, or open. Tell us how far it is from the nearest accessible point where a control unit could sit.
