Can you fit a rooflight in a stone slate roof?

Yes. Stone slate is the most demanding covering we work with, and it changes the method, the programme and the cost rather than ruling the job out. The courses are graded, the slates are irregular and heavy, and the opening has to be set out within the coursing rather than cut into a grid. It is worked out on the roof, not from a drawing.

What makes this covering different

Cotswold stone slate is not slate in the geological sense. It is a fissile limestone split into thin plates, and it behaves nothing like Welsh slate or a manufactured tile.

It is riven rather than cut, so no two slates are the same. Thickness varies, edges are irregular, and every slate on the roof was chosen to sit against the ones around it by somebody sorting through a pile. It is laid in diminishing courses, largest and thickest at the eaves and reducing towards the ridge, which is how the roof carries its own weight and sheds water at the pitches these buildings were built to. And it is heavy, far heavier than a tiled roof of the same area, so anything done to the structure has to respect what it is already holding.

Put together, those make a stone slate roof closer to a dry stone wall laid on a slope than to a tiled roof.

Set-out in a pattern that never repeats

On a concrete interlocking tile roof the covering repeats. The batten gauge is constant, the profile is identical everywhere, and the manufacturer supplies a flashing kit for exactly that arrangement. The opening drops into a known pattern.

Stone slate has no such pattern. Because the courses diminish, each has its own height, gauge and lap, and those change continuously up the slope. So the position of the opening changes the job. A rooflight low down sits among large, thick, heavy slates with deep laps. The same unit higher up sits among small fine ones, where the course heights are shorter and the margin for error is smaller with them.

That is why the set-out comes before anything else. Where the head and foot of the unit fall relative to the course lines decides how cleanly the courses can be interrupted, and it is established on the roof, before any slate is lifted.

Salvage is the material that matches

New limestone slate is quarried and it has its place, but on an old roof the honest answer is that salvage is the matching material. A newly quarried slate beside a weathered one reads as new, and it goes on reading as new for a very long time.

So the slates lifted to form the opening are the first source. They come off in order, are stacked so they do not break, and are set aside for going back around the unit. Where more are needed they come from reclaimed stock, sorted to the right size band for the course, which is a sourcing exercise rather than a delivery.

Size band is the point people miss. A salvaged slate of roughly the right colour is not automatically the right slate. Put one of the wrong size or thickness into a graded course and it is visible from the pavement, and it stays visible. Sorting matters as much as sourcing, and both are time in the job rather than material on an invoice.

Flashing dressed to something that is not flat

The weathering detail is where the difference really shows. A proprietary flashing kit works because it is pressed to sit against a known profile at a known gauge. Nothing about a stone roof is known in that sense: the surface is not flat, the edges are not square, and the thickness is not constant even across one course.

So the lead is dressed to what is actually there. It is worked into the courses above and to each side, bossed to follow the irregularity of the material rather than cut to a line on a drawing, and the laps are kept generous because the geometry is what keeps water out. Soakers are cut and set individually where the coursing requires it.

None of that is exotic, but it is slow, and it is skill rather than product. It cannot be compressed, and it is the first thing thinned out when somebody has priced the roof as though it were tiled.

The graded rhythm has to resume convincingly

An opening interrupts something the eye reads whether or not it knows what it is looking at. The courses run in a rhythm that shortens steadily towards the ridge, and that rhythm is most of what makes an old roof look right.

The technical requirement is that the courses stop cleanly at the foot and head of the unit and resume above it still holding their proper diminution and their laps. The visual requirement is that nobody standing in the road can see where the interruption happened. Those are the same requirement, met by the same care in the set-out.

Where it is done badly the roof tells on it. Courses resuming at the wrong height, laps closed up to make the coursing meet, or a band of slates all one size where the graded run should be reducing: each reads as a scar from the ground, and putting one right afterwards means taking the surrounding area off and setting out again.

Designation sits alongside the technical question

Stone slate and designated buildings overlap heavily in this county, so the two questions usually arrive together. They are separate, and both have to be answered.

Where a building is listed, alterations affecting its character generally need listed building consent in their own right, which is a different consent from planning permission. Where a building sits in a conservation area, the appearance of the alteration becomes a material consideration. Either way the finished look of the coursing and the lead is part of what is judged, not merely a matter of trade pride. That is why flush conservation-pattern units exist as a category: dark finish, sitting in the plane of the covering rather than proud of it.
